For discerning travellers to the Garden Route, The Manor House at Fancourt is a veritable five-star boutique experience waiting to be explored.
Romance, character, charm and exclusivity are all part of the ethos of The Manor House, which was built in 1859 – originally called Blanco House – by the estate’s first owner, Henry Fancourt White.
Constructed to replicate an English Cotswold mansion, the national monument has been through many years of restoration to represent and celebrate its heritage. Henry White was a lover of art and culture, which is still evident today in some of the paintings on the walls – like original Klaus Fussman oils, books in the library and family photographs on the walls, all signifying a bygone era of elegance.
However, some traditions remain, like the daily afternoon Tea – a selection of melt-in-the-mouth cakes – and evening canapés, both served in the Manor House Lounge.
As the crown of the Fancourt estate, The Manor House was also voted as ‘the most romantic hotel in Africa’. The attentive butler service ensures that guests want for nothing, and a private butler is on hand to help with unpacking, laundry, drawing baths, personal wake up calls as well as arranging sightseeing excursions and in-room meals.
Today, the more contemporary décor in the 18 suites strikes a delicate balance between the Old World charm and modern comfort.
The Montagu bar is a cosy space for evening drinks and the recently refurbished Henry White’s offers a refined classical dining in an intimate space. The décor sticks to its heritage theme, but leafy wallpaper creates a serene ambience.
With sous chef Ewald Schulenberg at the helm, Henry White’s promises a four-course ‘flavour journey’ that is seasonal and sustainable, showcasing the Garden Route’s diverse regional cuisine.
Of course, Fancourt is a golfer’s paradise and one should not miss an opportunity to play at the Links, rated SA’s no 1 golf course in the Golf Digest Rankings 2018. After golf, guests of The Manor House can enjoy cocktails at the private pool, or during winter enjoy red wine and log fires in the lounge.
Whatever the season, The Manor House offers an array of memorable activities – a picnic in the verdant Fancourt gardens, birdwatching or hiking trails, mountain biking or spa treats. Guests may even book a tour of the area – like visits to neighbouring farms and producers of homemade cheese, olives and wine. An oasis of luxury awaits you…
